A little island making a big splash for freshwater turtles
A small island with an important job has found a home at Laratinga Wetlands! In collaboration with Mount Barker District Council, we recently built and installed the first turtle island at Laratinga Wetlands, providing freshwater turtles with a safer place to nest while creating habitat for other wetland wildlife.

A morning well spent at Tolderol looking for migratory birds
Helping protect a little-known South Australian orchid
Second Nature Conservancy has partnered with the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board and the Threatened Plant Action Group (TPAG) to help restore habitat for the nationally vulnerable Sandhill Greenhood Orchid (Pterostylis arenicola).
19,000 plants. That’s a LOT of holes to dig!
Work is continuing at Lawari Conservation Park as part of our Mundoo Channel Wetland Enhancement Project, progressively restoring and strengthening important wetland and shorebird habitat along the Mundoo Channel
Twilight Bat Walk in Goolwa
A big thank you to everyone who braved the cool and cloudy conditions to join us for our bat evening in Goolwa.
Habitat Assessment in Woodside
What does wildlife need to thrive in an urban environment? And can a community garden provide everything they need?
Second Nature’s Threatened Flora focus in revegetation
At Second Nature, every planting program is carefully informed by the landscape around it — from key reference sites and local knowledge to biological data and the plants already thriving nearby.
Regeneration gains continue at Kanmantoo
Our Kanmantoo Woodland Revegetation Project is protecting significant native grassy ecosystems across more than 160 hectares at Kanmantoo.
Echidnas a Sell-out Success in Mount Barker
It was a full house for our recent event in Mount Barker with local author Danielle Clode.
Better data means better outcomes for nature
Using GPS mapping and spatial technology, our team is improving native revegetation and habitat restoration planning across our project sites and beyond.
Planting work continues for declining woodland birds
In an effort to create very open grassy woodland, close to 4,000 appropriate tree seedlings are being planted at low density by the Second Nature Conservancy on two priority sites at Rockleigh and Kanmantoo totaling 40 hectares.
Kanmantoo Woodland Revegetation Project update
Last month, our Senior Project Officer Ben took a break from the office and joined local contractor Adelaide Flora Management for a walk along Dawesley Creek to evaluate the progress of his bushcare weed control work and the revegetation works our team has been undertaking over the past few years.
Partnerships in action for threatened flora
We're collaborating with the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board and the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre to propagate the threatened Monarto Mintbush (Prostanthera eurybioides), a species known for its strong physiological seed dormancy.
Revegetation Walk at Callington
We recently hosted some of our project partners at one of our grassy woodland revegetation sites in Callington.
Kinchina Planting Day 2026
It was all hands (and boots!) on deck last week at Kinchina Conservation Park for our annual planting day as part of the Mulgundawa to Tungkillo Biodiversity Links project.
Rockleigh Biodiversity Workshop Wrap Up
On a cool autumn morning last week, local landholders gathered at the Rockleigh Old School House, welcomed by a warm fire and a shared passion for restoring biodiversity across the landscape as part of our Mulgundawa to Tungkillo Biodiversity Links project.
Boosting Backyard Biodiversity in Mount Barker with Wildlife Gardening 2026
This year’s Mount Barker Wildlife Gardening plant packs sold out in record time, with 200 subsidised packs helping local residents create wildlife-friendly gardens using locally native species that support biodiversity across the region.
Backyards for Biodiversity… growing community, together
Over the past 12 weeks, 30 south coast locals have come together to connect with nature - and each other- through our Backyards for Biodiversity series
