November is Turtle Month!

Let’s talk turtles.

Forget spring racing season… we're here for the great turtle migration! 👀

Spring and early summer are busy times for our local freshwater turtles, with females heading out of the water to find somewhere suitable to lay their eggs.

Two of our local freshwater turtles are:

🐢 Eastern Long-necked Turtle – the long-necked wanderer, often spotted travelling over land between wetlands and other waterbodies. And yes, it really can release a rather stinky smell when threatened!

🐢 Murray Short-necked Turtle – a broad-shelled local with a shorter neck, often found in rivers, lakes and wetlands.

Both have an important role to play in our freshwater ecosystems, but we still need to learn more about where they live, breed and move around our region.

Seen a turtle? Found a nest? Spotted a turtle crossing the road? Please record it on TurtleSAT! Every sighting helps build our understanding of local turtle populations and supports conservation efforts.

Find out more or record your sighting at https://www.turtlesat.org.au/

Let's make November a month for the turtles! 💚

The TURTLE Project is an initiative of the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board with funding from the South Australian Government’s Landscape Priorities Fund.
