This month marks ten years since SNC took over management of the Alexandrina Community Nursery in Goolwa.
Over this time, more than 750,000 local native seedlings have been propagated at the nursery, including rare and threatened species that can be tricky to grow. These plants are helping restore local bushland, strengthen habitat for wildlife and bring more biodiversity into gardens across the Fleurieu Peninsula and Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges.
A big part of that success is Nursery Manager Ben Simon, whose knowledge of local flora, seed collection and propagation has helped thousands of people find the right plants for their property.
Nursery Manager Ben with long term volunteer Ilona
This couldn’t be achieved with the support of our amazing volunteers, with dozens of local people contributing their time over the years to raising seedlings and supporting day-to-day nursery operations. A special shout-out to Ilona and Gaye! These two wonderful volunteers have been part of the nursery team for the entire 10 years. Their dedication, time and hard work have helped keep the nursery growing, and we’re so grateful to have had them alongside us on this journey.
We’re proud of what the nursery has achieved and excited about what’s still to come, with plenty more local plants to grow and biodiversity to support.
Come and see us! The Alexandrina Community Nursery is open every Friday, 9am–4pm, on Kessell Road, Goolwa. Drop in for a browse, pick up some local native plants and get expert advice on what will thrive in your garden.
Here’s to the next 10 years of growing local!
