Collecting for Conservation – Seed Workshop Recap

Activity From Mulgundawa to Tungkillo Biodiversity Links Project

Recently we hosted an inspiring seed-collecting workshop led by the incredibly knowledgeable Phil from Blackwood Seeds.

This hands-on session brought together a fantastic group of enthusiastic participants, all keen to learn more about native seed collection on a beautiful private property in Monarto South (Bremer River Fodder).

We started the day by unpacking the essentials of seed collection permits - how to apply, the guidelines to follow, and why they matter. From there, we moved into the full seed-collection process, including choosing the right equipment and recognising when seeds are truly ready to harvest.

Participants then enjoyed an immersive walk-and-talk, exploring different collection methods suited to a variety of native plant species. We also covered when it’s better to take cuttings rather than collect seed, along with best-practice cleaning and storage techniques to maintain seed quality and viability.

One of the standout highlights of the workshop was the connections made on the day. It was wonderful to see landholders sharing knowledge, swapping stories, and catching up on what’s been happening on their properties.

A huge thanks to everyone who joined us - your passion and curiosity help strengthen our community’s capacity to care for and restore local landscapes.

This project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies.
