Did you know 80% of people in our local area live in apartments, and strata buildings account for over 1/3 of energy use in our area?
Council's Environment Sustainability Team has been helping large strata buildings reduce their energy consumption, carbon footprint and operating costs in common areas, with lighting upgrades and other energy efficient equipment.
Last year 10 strata buildings in Bondi Junction participated in this Building Futures program.
As part of this free program, we provided the strata committees with expert energy audit reports, recommendations, implementation support to seek quotes from suppliers, matched funding for upgrades, training opportunities and other sustainability advice.
Over the 12 months, ten out of the 10 buildings implemented one-two cost-effective efficiency upgrades in their common property, typically lighting and carpark equipment.
Recent data analysis shows that these energy-saving retrofits have resulted in:
- Average 24% energy use reductions (a few slashed energy use by 33%)
- 651 tonnes total avoided carbon emissions each year
- $13k average annual bill savings for each building
- Paybacks on investment as little as 6 months (average around 2.5 years).
The program was received very positively by the strata owners and building managers involved:
“Incredibly helpful advice and support to assist to make our building perform better environmentally and financially.” Kevin Lance, Building Manager Eastgate Gardens
“We were thrilled with the knowledge and professionalism of the program team, to help identify key projects that will save us money into the future.” Joe Scicluna Treasurer, Strata Committee ParkSun
We again congratulate all 10 buildings which participated on their leadership and thank them for choosing a better future for their buildings, and our community at large.
The program continues this year with 10 other buildings across the wider Local Government Area.
